John W. Olver Design Building Construction: A Photo Essay

by Alexander C. Schreyer, Peggi Clouston

The John W. Olver Design Building at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is one of the most striking examples of contemporary heavy-timber (“MassTimber”) design and construction. As an academic home for three departments that teach about the sustainable built environment, it provides a fitting showcase for advanced building technologies, sustainable materials, and efficient building systems.

Too many construction sites hide away behind blacked-out fences, only to be considered a necessary nuisance until the building is complete. Sometimes it takes a special building to change that. This book’s more than 160 images show the process of constructing this building in vivid detail. Building assemblies as well as the construction workers’ processes are shown and celebrated as a result.
